SAFD: Two firefighters injured while battling blaze at northeast-side home

The kids told their parents they smelled something burning, giving them enough time to escape safely with their dog.

SAN ANTONIO — Two firefighters were injured while battling a blaze on the far northeast side of town early Tuesday morning, officials say.

Crews were dispatched to the 6000 block of Red Rose in Kirby around 2 a.m. for reports of a fire.

Officials say a family of four got home from the movies and was getting ready for bed when the children noticed they smelled something burning and told the parents.

The parents and the kids were able to get out of the home safely with their dog. When firefighters arrived at the home, the second floor was fully engulfed in flames.

Two firefighters were checked out for injuries, one for heat exhaustion and the other who had tripped and hit his head.

Officials say the second floor was severely damaged by the fire and the first floor suffered significant smoke and water damage.

The Red Cross will be helping find the family a place to stay.

No word on what may have caused the fire.

This is a developing story.
