SAISD now accepting proposals for innovative uses of its closed campuses

The district said it’s seeking ideas to repurpose its vacant school properties with a goal of transforming them into “productive assets” that benefit the community.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) is seeking ideas for what should become of several vacant school properties.

In a press release, SAISD said it is now accepting proposals from qualified organizations for the lease and repurposing of several vacant district-owned buildings and grounds.

The district invites community-based partners to propose innovative uses for the vacant properties—so long as those uses “align with community needs and further a district purpose.”

This comes after several facilities were closed as a result of SAISD’s “right-sizing” initiative, amid issues stemming from decreasing enrollment at San Antonio’s third-largest district and a simultaneous lack of facility reduction.

Last fall, the district launched a survey to gather input from the community and see how the facilities could be “reimagined so that the buildings continue to benefit and serve them.”

SAISD said the latest initiative to accept repurposing proposals is part of its “broader commitment to community engagement and strategic use of public assets to serve both educational and community interests.”

The primary goal, according to SAISD, is to transform these underutilized spaces into productive assets that benefit surrounding neighborhoods and advance the district’s mission.

Available properties include:

  • Brewer – 906 Merida Street
  • Douglass – 318 Martin Luther King Drive
  • Gonzales – 518 E. Magnolia Avenue
  • Lamar – 201 Parland Place
  • Pickett – 1931 E. Houston Street

The district said interested organizations may visit the website here to submit a proposal, register for scheduled facility tours, ask questions and access additional information.

Proposals are due by Oct. 17, 2025 by 5 p.m. via the Bonfire procurement portal.
