SAISD releases report on how January’s freeze was handled

The district did not have a proper plan when heating outages began mounting.

SAN ANTONIO — SAISD has released a report on how the district handled its H-VAC issues during the freeze back in January.

During the freeze, San Antonio ISD suffered system wide failures that led the district to closing all schools on January 18 and 19.

In the report, board trustees and district leaders acknowledged that the H-VAC issue did not arise overnight, but evolved over decades.

They found the degradation was due to human errors over the last 20 years. The district did not have a proper plan when heating outages began mounting.

Other examples included SAISD not budgeting for ongoing maintenance of the heating and cooling systems.

The report also blamed under-funding of Texas public schools as a factor in keeping up aging building infrastructure.

The report included future recommendations to prevent another failure.

Those range from future bonds to have a set-aside amount to address district infrastructure investment to Superintendent Jaime Aquino conducting a study of excess facility capacity within the district.
