San Antonians share favorite memories at Central Library amid 30 year celebration

The Central Library first opened in May 1995.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Central Library celebrated 30 years and residents wanted to mark the momentous occasion with heartfelt notes.

On Saturday, May 31 several people gathered at the iconic, enchilada-red building for the Central Library’s special 30th anniversary celebration, which took place from 10:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

One of the family-friendly activities included writing about a person’s favorite memory at the Central Library. Dozens of people put their pencil to work, writing about the first time they walked into the library or went to an event with a beloved family member.

One person wrote about a bittersweet memory, “My father brought me to the library because he valued education. He is now deceased and this building reminds me of him.”

Another wrote about a full circle moment, “My grandma brought my sister and I when the library first opened. I used to take my son here when he was little and today we came with my granddaughter.”

And one person even shared her surprising visit to the iconic building, “I ‘accidentally’ came on my 45th birthday when we were visiting San Antonio and I got lost. What a gift!”

The San Antonio Public Library posted the notes on their Community Memory Mural as a reminder of how special the Central Library is to the Alamo City.

On Facebook, SAPL officials said they “loved reading every word” and would love to hear even more – inviting the public to share more memories.

The Central Library was designed by renowned Mexican architect, Ricardo Legorreta and originally opened its doors on May 20, 1995.
