Drivers heading to the San Antonio airport will see lane closures, new pickup areas and traffic changes as terminal construction gets underway.
SAN ANTONIO — Travelers heading to the San Antonio International Airport will want to give themselves a little extra time starting this week.
Construction is now underway on the airport’s new terminal project, and with it comes the first round of traffic changes for passengers using Terminal B.
Airport officials say Phase 1 begins Monday, March 23, with half of the lanes at Terminal B arrivals and departures closing through the end of the year.
The lane closures will affect the far end closest to the airport, which means drivers picking up or dropping off passengers may need to plan ahead a bit more when loading luggage.
There’s also a change for anyone catching a ride after landing. Officials say hotel shuttles, parking shuttles and rideshare pickups will still operate on the lower level, but in a new designated pickup area.
To help ease congestion, airport staff are encouraging drivers to use the free cell phone waiting lot, which also offers free Wi-Fi, instead of circling the terminals.
Another option is the short-term parking garage, where parking starts at $5 for the first hour.
Airport leaders say most of the heavy construction work is expected to happen overnight, but travelers should still expect delays and changing traffic patterns as the project moves forward.
The message from the airport is simple: plan ahead before heading out.
