The family of Joe Villarreal says he died following health complications. Villarreal had just celebrated his birthday on April 4.

His latest art installation was centered around childhood games. The two sculptures, titled El Papalote and El Trompo, are situated along West Commerce Street near the Frio Street intersection.
Mr. Villarreal was 72-years-old.
