San Antonio-based H-E-B, USAA land on Forbes list of Best Employers

San Antonio’s largest grocery store company, as well as a local insurance and banking giant, have landed on one of Forbes’ “Best of” lists this year. H-E-B landed near the top of the list in the No. 5 spot and USAA landed at No. 42 out of 500 companies on Forbes’ Best Large Employers in America list.

H-E-B landed among the top 10 largest employers with 145,000 employees as of February 2023. The company that was founded in 1905 in Kerrville also ranked No. 35 on the list of Customer Experience – All Stars. The company made some big business moves in 2022 with its push into the Dallas-Fort Worth market being among them.

H-E-B opened its first DFW-area stores in Frisco and Plano last year to long lines. The San Antonio-based grocer has mores stores on the way for the area as well. H-E-B also opened a two-story store at Lake Austin on February 14 and its first Cibolo store on January 25. The company’s reported revenue for 2022 was $38.9 billion.

Another giant in San Antonio, USAA, ranked among the top 50 with 36,000 employees as of February 2023. The financial services company, which serves military members, veterans, and their families, was founded in 1922. The company ranked higher than H-E-B on the Customer Experience list at No. 23.

USAA celebrated 100 years in 2022, using that opportunity to provide 100 vehicles to military families and veterans across the U.S. The company also provided a one-time payment of $1,000 to its employees to help combat inflation costs.

The list was created by surveying around 45,000 employees in the U.S. that worked for companies with more than 5,000 employees.
