San Antonio BBQ chef to compete in family cook-off on national TV

Well known in the Texas BBQ scene, Steve Grams of San Antonio will compete in Family Recipe Showdown on The Food Network for a chance at a $10,000 prize.

SAN ANTONIO — One of San Antonio’s own will compete in a family cook-off for a $10,000 prize on national television this week, according to a press release.

Local BBQ competitor and rodeo volunteer Steve Grams will be featured as a contestant on The Food Network’s Family Recipe Showdown.

The multi-generational home cooking competition, hosted by Academy Award-winner Octavia Spencer and New Orleans chef Edgar “Dook” Chase, celebrates secret family recipes and traditions. In each episode, three teams of family duos prepare cherished family recipes while tackling surprise challenges inspired by celebrity guest judges.

Grams and his cousin, Ken Taylor of San Angelo, will appear on Season 1, Episode 6: “Team Tailgate.” Teams will go head-to-head with their best tailgate dishes for a chance at a $10,000 prize, featuring celebrity judge Danielle Brooks from Orange is the New Black and The Color Purple.

“It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience to cook for Octavia Spencer and Chef Dook Chase,” said Grams. “We had a blast bringing our Texas flavors and family traditions to the competition.”

The San Antonio native and Texas A&M University alum, graduated from Robert E. Lee High School and currently works at M&S Engineering in Spring Branch.

Grams is an active competition cooker and former chairman of the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Bar-B-Que Cook-Off—well known in the Texas BBQ scene for his big, bold smoked brisket.

He also plays a key role in educational wine-pairing events as a volunteer for the rodeo’s Wine Committee, preparing his signature dishes to compliment and elevate championship-winning wines.

The episode airs this Thursday, July 31 at 8 p.m. CST on The Food Network.
