San Antonio city council approves vape shop ‘buffer zone’ around schools

The measure establishes a 1,000-foot buffer zone around schools, daycare centers and institutes of higher education.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio city council approved a measure to prevent new vape shops from opening around schools and daycares.

The measure establishes a 1,000-foot buffer zone around schools, daycare centers and institutes of higher education that prohibits shops that primarily sell tobacco, e-cigarettes/vapes, hookah, and headshops.

The proposal was brought to the council by District 9 representative John Courage back in September of last year. The rule says existing shops that are already within 1,000 feet of a school would be grandfathered in.

“We’re not trying to put any business out of business that exists today,” Courage said in September. “What we want to do is just limit the proliferation of these products closer to schools. We want to take every step that we can to keep our children safe and from developing bad or dangerous habits.”

Multiple school districts in the San Antonio area expressed support for the new rule.

The San Antonio city council voted to approve the measure in its Thursday meeting.
