San Antonio City Council considers joining Guadalupe County in flood mitigation efforts

Guadalupe County is asking San Antonio to join a countywide drainage study focused on long-term flood mitigation. City leaders are expected to vote Thursday.

SAN ANTONIO — Last summer’s deadly flooding is still fresh in the minds of many here in San Antonio.

City leaders are being asked to take part in a new group effort aimed at reducing flood risks to mitigate any future disasters.

Guadalupe County is asking San Antonio to join a countywide drainage study focused on long-term flood mitigation. County officials want to create a countywide master drainage plan.

The goal is to take a closer look at flood risks across the entire county, update any outdated data and come up with a long-term strategy to help prevent future flooding disasters like the region experienced last year.

San Antonio is being asked to take part in the project and if City Council signs on, the city would have a seat at the table during the planning process. The city would also get full access to the drainage study and its findings.

City leaders would also be involved in ongoing stakeholder discussions as the plan moves forward.

If the city chooses to be a part of this partnership, it would not cost to join.

The vote is a part of consent agenda and could be approved at the council meeting on Thursday morning which starts at 9 a.m.
