San Antonio City Council to discuss concerns over possible censure of Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones

Five councilmembers are calling for discussion of a possible censure of Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones during a special meeting Monday.

Tensions at City Hall are expected to take center stage Monday morning as the San Antonio City Council meets to publicly discuss concerns surrounding Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones and the possibility of a censure.

City leaders have emphasized that the special meeting is intended for discussion only, and no formal action is expected to be taken. If a censure were to move forward at a later date, it would serve as a symbolic rebuke rather than carry legal consequences — though it could have political implications.

The discussion comes after five councilmembers submitted a memo calling for consideration of a censure vote. According to the memo, the concerns date back to last summer, with the most recent incident allegedly occurring on February 5 and involving District 1 Councilmember Sukh Kaur.

District 3 Councilwoman Phyllis Viagran told KENS 5 the incident stemmed from an agenda item related to the future of Bonham Exchange, a historic downtown nightclub. The discussion centered on whether the venue could remain open after missing a deadline to install required fire sprinklers.

In a statement, Mayor Ortiz Jones acknowledged disagreements with colleagues.

“I am disappointed that some of my colleagues felt this was a necessary step,” the mayor said. “But I hear their feedback and look forward to continuing to work with them to make San Antonio better.”

The special council meeting is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. KENS 5 will continue to follow developments and provide updates as the discussion unfolds.
