San Antonio City Council wants to make changes to help reduce cluster mailbox theft

The Public Safety Committee will hear Councilwoman Marina Alderete Gavito’s proposal Tuesday afternoon and see if they want to move forward with making it a reality.

SAN ANTONIO — We have seen a rash of cluster mailbox thefts in San Antonio and now it appears that City Council may be about to do something about it.

After nearly a year, one councilmember’s proposal is moving forward.

The Public Safety Committee will hear Councilwoman Marina Alderete Gavito’s proposal Tuesday afternoon and see if they want to move forward with making it a reality.

Thefts at cluster mailboxes have become such a problem, it’s almost common place.

Just last month, two men were arrested accused of swiping mail from cluster mailboxes in Garden Ridge.

Aldrete-Gavito has a twofold plan, which adds additional streetlights to the area of the cluster mailboxes, and creates a task force, made up of stakeholders, including USPS, developers, council, and others.

We spoke to the councilwoman last October, when she filed her proposal.

“You have certificates getting stolen, personal information getting stolen, key pieces of mail that they’re expecting and waiting on, never arriving,” said Gavito. “We need to get the right minds in the room to dig into all of those things and see what the truth is.”

The Public Safety committee will decide Tuesday afternoon  how viable the proposal is, and if more work needs to be done.

From there, the committee can decide if it will go to full council for a vote.
