San Antonio city leaders to address ICE relationship with local law enforcement in special session

Balancing public safety with cooperation is expected to be at the center of discussion in Thursday’s meeting.

SAN ANTONIO — Concerns over immigration enforcement will be front and center at City Hall on Thursday morning.

San Antonio leaders are set to hold a special session focused on local law enforcement and its role with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The special session was called by Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones, who says the focus is transparency and helping the community better understand how local police are required to interact with federal immigration authorities under state law.

KENS 5 spoke extensively to the mayor about ICE and its presence here in the city in our Mondays with the Mayor segment.

She pointed out state and federal constraints they have with the city, since city law enforcement does have to cooperate with federal enforcement. Balancing public safety with cooperation is what will be addressed in Thursday’s meeting.

“Hopefully we can get to a place where people can understand what they have to do in those situations, what they don’t have to do with those situations and if they feel mistreated, what is the proper recourse for that,” said Ortiz Jones.

While there have been protests against ICE operations in San Antonio, the mayor applauded the community for keeping those peaceful

Public comment will be a part of Thursday’s discussion. The special session starts at 9 a.m.
