San Antonio comes together for the largest free Thanksgiving dinner in the country

Over 550 turkeys are being prepped alongside classic sides like stuffing, green beans, and of course, cranberry sauce.

SAN ANTONIO — Thanksgiving is a time for togetherness, and San Antonio shines brightest with its long-standing tradition: The Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner. This massive event, the largest free Thanksgiving feast in the country, will serve over 25,000 meals to those in need or simply looking for a place to connect on Thanksgiving Day.

The Henry B. González Convention Center has transformed into what can only be described as a “Thanksgiving factory” as over 550 turkeys are being prepped alongside classic sides like stuffing, green beans, and of course, cranberry sauce.

Hundreds of volunteers are hard at work in the kitchen, including Shanita Bush, who shared how much this event means to her.

“Just being here and doing this for the community is great for my soul,” said Bush. “It doesn’t matter if we’re deboning turkeys or prepping sweet potatoes, we love being here to help.”

Since 1979, the Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner has been a beacon of hope and kindness for San Antonio. It was started by Raul Jimenez to ensure that no one in the city spent Thanksgiving alone or without a meal.

Now, the event is carried on by his family, with nearly 5,000 volunteers stepping up each year to keep the tradition alive.

“It’s truly the city of San Antonio that makes this event so special,” said Jimenez. “People give their time, and that’s what makes it incredible. We’re so excited to feed 25,000 people this year and give back to the community we love.”

This event is about more than filling plates—it’s about filling hearts. Volunteers are also decorating the hall with handmade placemats crafted by local children, adding a personal and welcoming touch.

Thanksgiving Day at the Raul Jimenez Dinner will include live music, a lively dance floor, and thousands of smiling faces coming together to celebrate.

Bush says the experience is about passing on the importance of giving back. “I want my daughter to see what it means to help others, to give back, and to feel that same fullness of heart.”

How to Join the Celebration:

Doors open at 9 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day at the Henry B. González Convention Center. Food service, music, and entertainment will run from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Whether you’re in need of a warm meal or just a sense of connection, the Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner welcomes everyone with open arms.

This tradition is a true testament to San Antonio’s heart and generosity, proof that Thanksgiving is about more than food; it’s about community.
