San Antonio council member proposes expanding CaféCollege to include career training

A proposal aims to expand CaféCollege services to include career readiness programs as workforce paths evolve.

SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio council member is calling for a closer look at how CaféCollege serves students, as career pathways continue to evolve.

District 8 Councilwoman Ivalis Meza Gonzalez has submitted a Council Consideration Request asking the city’s Governance Committee to evaluate the program and explore ways to expand its impact.

Since launching in 2010, cafécollege has served as a key resource for local students, offering college advising, financial aid assistance and scholarship support to help thousands pursue higher education.

But Gonzalez says the current model may need to grow alongside changing workforce demands.

“As career pathways continue to diversify, we must ensure every young person, regardless of the path they choose—is equipped with the tools, skills and confidence to succeed,” she said.

The proposal calls for coordinating with partners such as the San Antonio Education Partnership, which operates cafécollege, as well as SA Works, Alamo Colleges District, University of Texas at San Antonio and Texas A&M University–San Antonio.

The goal is to identify gaps and potentially add career readiness programming, including training for certifications and trade-based careers.

City leaders say the effort would align with statewide workforce initiatives and help strengthen economic mobility for young people in San Antonio.

The request has already received support from several councilmembers and will now move to the Governance Committee for review before any changes are made.
