San Antonio Councilman Jalen McKee Rodriguez introduces the LOVIN Policy to counter discrimination, aiming to create inclusive city practices.
SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio City Councilman Jalen McKee Rodriguez is pushing an initiative created by his office to prevent discrimination and violence in the community.
It is being called “Looking Out for Vulnerable Impacted Neighbors,” or the LOVIN Policy. It was announced back in mid-April and has since made the rounds to other districts.
Councilman Rodriguez says his office made the policy to make San Antonio a welcoming space for everyone as recent law changes come down from the capital. One law change the councilman pointed out was Gov. Abbott passing the Texas Women’s Privacy Act last session. The requires everyone to use bathrooms and private spaces based on the gender listed on their birth certificate in government buildings, universities, prisons, and private shelters. Institutions not following the policy face a fine of up to $125,000.
McKee’s goal with the LOVIN policy would create single use restrooms across the city and allow library users to get a card matching their gender identity. The policy would also continue with a study on how the city works with marginalized communities.
“Not only do we have to look at our policies in every way that someone may interact with the city, we also are going to continue to advocate at the state and federal level for protections and for, safeguards for all members of our community, especially those who are our most marginalized,” Councilman Rodriguez.
At this point, the plan is still a proposal. Councilman Rodriguez hopes it will pass the governance committee and then the full council.
