San Antonio father accused of abandoning 3-month-old baby

An arrest affidavit states that 35-year-old Richard Viera took off with his belongings after the baby’s mother stayed out late, leaving the baby behind.

SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio man is accused of abandoning his 3-month-old baby after he took his belongings and left his apartment when the baby’s mother stayed out late after work, according to arrest documents.

Richard Viera, 35, was arrested following an investigation into an alleged incident reported by the child’s mother on February 28.

An arrest warrant details text messages between the couple on that day. According to investigators, on that morning at around 10:30 a.m., the child’s mother left for work, texting with Viera throughout the day and checking in on the child.

At around 10 p.m. the woman texted Viera saying she was closing and going to get a drink after work. The warrant states that she returned home at around 1:30 a.m. to find the baby crying alone in the bed. Viera, his belongings and his vehicle were also gone upon arrival, according to arrest documents.

The woman’s demands for him to respond to her phone calls and texts, according to the warrant, were met with little to eventually no response from Viera.

The woman told authorities Viera was the only person with care and custody when he grabbed his belongings and left the apartment, leaving the baby alone for an unknown amount of time.

The 35-year-old father was arrested and charged with abandoning a child with no intent to return.
