San Antonio firefighter injured by woman with knife during standoff, suspect in custody, SAPD says

A San Antonio firefighter sustained minor injuries after being attacked with a knife during a standoff on the northwest side of the city.

SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio firefighter was injured by a knife-wielding woman while working an hourslong standoff on the northwest side of the city Wednesday morning, officials said.

Emergency responders were called to the 15000 block of Market Hill Boulevard for a welfare check of a 30-year-old woman inside an apartment around 10 a.m.

Apartment management told investigators they were unable to contact the woman and that the apartment was supposed to be vacant at the end of March. When management failed to contact her they called emergency responders.

SAPD Spokesperson Emily Garvin said upon arrival, SAFD and SAPD attempted to breach the apartment and as this was happening the woman came outside and through the opening of the door began swinging a knife, striking a firefighter. The firefighter sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

Garvin said after the attack, the woman barricaded herself in the back of the apartment complex. Police were able to apprehend her a short time later.

According to SAPD, the woman has been arrested before and the police have responded to the location in the past.

Authorities said charges are currently pending and this is an ongoing investigation.
