San Antonio firefighter injured fighting shed fire

The battalion chief tells us the firefighter cut his hand fighting the fire and was taken to the hospital. He’s expected to be okay.

SAN ANTONIO — A firefighter is in the hospital after working to put out a large shed fire north of downtown early Wednesday morning.

It happened around 1 a.m. on West Laurel Street near San Pedro Avenue.

The battalion chief tells us he cut his hand fighting the fire and was taken to University Hospital, but is expected to be okay.

The problem firefighters had on this fire is that it wasn’t their first time coming to the shed.

Firefighters showed up to heavy smoke pouring out of the structure, which is behind a bar and next to a gas station.

The chief tells us crews were able to quickly get the fire under control to prevent any threat of spreading to the gas station.

No one was inside the shed at the time and no one else besides the one firefighter got hurt.

Coming back to the shed for a second fire, first responders say the building was a complete loss. Firefighters were by told by those at the scene homeless people were living in the space.

We’ve reached out to SAFD to learn how the fire started.
