SAN ANTONIO — Two days away from Thanksgiving, the San Antonio Food Bank is utilizing all of its resources to make sure families have food on the table.
The organization has been holding a donation drive to cover 29 counties in South Texas. The San Antonio Food Bank (SAFB) serves over 100,000 people a week, and their goal for this year was to collect 20,000 turkeys.
When that number was met, the nonprofit announced a new mission: 30,000 turkeys to fight food insecurity during the holidays. Staff say they’ve already distributed 70% of the turkeys they’ve received; it’s typical, they say, to see a spike in families needing help this time of year.
To help out, you can donate online or drop a turkey off at the food bank in person.
Beyond food and money donations, the food bank says it also needs the community’s help sharing online and volunteering.
“We’ve got boxes to pack and produce bags to put together and and food distributions. If you can lend a little bit of hand we could sure use it this holiday season,” says Eric Cooper, SAFB director.
If you need help yourself, the food bank has multiple distribution spots around South Texas. SAFB also partners with Meals on Wheels to do deliveries, and prepares meals for homeless residents in the community.
A new initiative the food bank has undertaken: the creation of a digital voucher program that sends a ticket straight to your phone, making it easier to grab a turkey for free at the grocery store.
For more information, you can call SAFB at (210)431-8326. Leftover turkeys not given out to families this week will be held over for Christmas.
