The San Antonio Food Bank says almost 190,000 South Texans are affected by the federal shutdown.
SAN ANTONIO — We’re 22 days into the government shutdown and money is running thin for many federal workers and military members.
To help make ends meet, the San Antonio Food Bank is now rolling out a new plan.
The San Antonio Food Bank currently gives out about two million pounds of food and supplies each week, and they aim to give an additional one million pounds to help makes ends meet.
Almost 190,000 South Texans are affected by the federal shutdown, including federal employees, contractors, and military members across the 29 counties the San Antonio Food Bank serves.
If the federal shutdown continues past October 27, families who rely on SNAP benefits won’t get their benefits. This includes families who use WIC, which is a total of around 300,000 people.
With this plan, the San Antonio Food Bank says it can serve up to 350,000 individuals affected.
But they need an extra $500,000 dollars a week, and they’re calling on the community to help them with donations.
If you are in need, the San Antonio Food Bank is also adding extra food distribution spots.
One is happening Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. and two more will take place on Thursday and Friday.
You must register in advance for these events.
The San Antonio Food Bank is also asking for your help to feed these families and are looking for shelf-stable foods, formula, and diapers or any monetary donation.
