SAN ANTONIO — The U.S. Marshals arrested a fugitive wanted in connection to three separate cases, including the murder of a 77-year-old man in 2019.
24-year-old Jon Michael Rubio was taken into custody on March 14 by Mexican authorities in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico.
He was brought back to Bexar County where he is being held without bond. Rubio is now indicted for the murder of Jose Rodriguez.
On July 26, 2019, Investigators said Rodriguez was shot and killed outside a gas station off Fair Avenue after purchasing lottery tickets. Police said two men had attempted to rob him before shooting him multiple times, including in the face.
Two other men were arrested in the following months and charged with capital murder but their cases were dismissed.
However, Rubio is also charged in connection to a different shooting that happened just days before the murder. Three people were injured in the shooting off Tulipan Walk Street.
Rubio was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Court records show he bonded out of jail but failed to appear for a hearing in March 2023.
Then in September 2023, according to an arrest warrant, Rubio was connected to a targeted kidnapping of a San Antonio couple over money their daughter had in her possession.
The warrant states the money belonged to Rubio. He was in Mexico at the time and allegedly orchestrated the kidnapping of her parents in order to get it back.
Rubio has already been indicted for the murder of Rodriguez.
“Through strong international partnerships, the U.S. Marshals Service collaborates with law enforcement agencies in Mexico and beyond to facilitate the apprehension of fugitives and uphold justice,” said Susan Pamerleau, U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Texas. “These cooperative efforts play a vital role in enhancing public safety and ensuring that fugitives are held accountable.”
