SAN ANTONIO — With just one month to go, the countdown is on for San Antonio’s 135th Fiesta celebration, as the city begins to buzz with early signs of the annual tradition, including the appearance of colorful Fiesta medals across town.
For many locals, Fiesta San Antonio is more than a series of events, it’s a reflection of the city’s identity and community spirit.
Festivities kicked off Tuesday with the “People’s Parade,” where music and dancing set the tone for the weeks ahead.
Fiesta Commission President Ferne Burney says planning ahead is key for attendees looking to make the most of the celebration. She recommends using the official Fiesta San Antonio website’s map feature to navigate the more than 100 scheduled events.
“That will show you all of the over 100 events during Fiesta,” Burney said. “It will not only tell what events there are, it will show you where they are, what they cost, if they do cost.”
Fiesta generates a major economic impact for the city, bringing in more than $360 million through a wide range of events that highlight history, art and culture.
Burney noted that many of those events also serve as fundraisers for local nonprofits.
“Our parade chairs are leased to various nonprofits across the city,” she said. “Groups then sell those chairs — their return on profit is over a million dollars. So these are Boy Scouts, church groups. It’s not just our member organizations, it’s many nonprofits.”
As anticipation builds, San Antonio is preparing to welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors to one of its most iconic annual celebrations.
A fan-favorite event expected to draw large crowds is “A Night in Old San Antonio,” commonly known as NIOSA.
“We have so much food and entertainment. People are just used to it, t’s tradition,” said Deanna Keesee, NIOSA treasurer. “We’re run by volunteers. We support the Conservation Society. It’s all for a great cause.”
Fiesta’s reach is also expanding internationally. Burney said 17 travel writers from around the world, including some from China, are expected to attend this year’s festivities.
“Our events are getting more vibrant. We’re reaching more people,” Burney said. “We’re looking for a great time for Fiesta.”
