Airport staff say the new terminal will feature up to 17 gates taking up more than 850,000 square feet.
SAN ANTONIO — Travelers will soon have new gateways to fly outside the San Antonio International Airport.
On Tuesday, the San Antonio International Airport is breaking ground on a new terminal to expand its services.
Once the terminal is built, the San Antonio International Airport says travelers will be able to choose from up to 17 gates to catch a flight.
At the groundbreaking, city and airport leaders are going to share how the new terminal will look once construction is competed. The spacious new terminal is estimated to be over 850,000 square feet.
While the project carries a $1.2 billion price tag, airport staff says this is badly needed because San Antonio is one of the fastest growing medium sized airports in the U.S.
They recently opened a new airport parking system where you can make an online reservation.
The airport also opened new lines in November to reach Boston and Monterrey, Mexico.
“That’s bringing the prices down, which creates customers to want to fly out of San Antonio even more because of that price range for those tickets and the competition that’s being created between these carriers,” said Jesus Saenz, San Antonio Director of Airports.
After the first shovel hits the earth, construction vehicles are going to start work.
Chef’s will also be present to give a taste of what travelers can have in the new space.
The groundbreaking is going to be happening at 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
It’ll be in the parking lot beside Terminal B.
