San Antonio ISD unanimously votes to close west-side school

Carvajal Elementary was opened in 1949 and named after one of San Antonio’s most loved educator and civic leader: Esther Perez Carvajal, according to SAISD.

SAN ANTONIO — The SAISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved the closure of Carvajal Elementary on the city’s west side.

On Tuesday night, the vote was confirmed to close the west-side school.

Carvajal Elementary was opened in 1949 and named after one of San Antonio’s best loved educator and civic leader: Esther Perez Carvajal, according to SAISD.

District leaders say the closure was a result of several challenges at the campus including declining enrollment, and poor academic performance.

Students who currently go to school at Carvajal will be reassigned to Barkley-Ruiz or De Zavala Elementary School beginning next school year.
