San Antonio launches 2027 budget survey as city faces funding challenges

City leaders are asking residents to weigh in on spending priorities as San Antonio prepares its 2027 budget.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio leaders are asking residents to weigh in on how city dollars should be spent as officials begin planning the 2027 budget.

The city has launched a public survey aimed at gathering input on priorities, as leaders face declining revenue and changes in state and federal funding.

One key area of discussion is public safety.

In the 2026 budget, the San Antonio Police Department received about $632 million out of the city’s $4 billion budget.

A 2023 study recommended hiring 360 officers over a five-year period to keep up with the city’s growing population. However, last year, city council funded just 40 new officer positions.

Councilmembers Marina Alderete Gavito, Misty Spears and Marc Whyte have pushed to revisit that plan, but the proposal has been tabled for further discussion.

Beyond public safety, the budget will also determine funding for city services, programs and development projects.

Officials say the survey takes less than five minutes to complete and is available online, as well as at libraries, senior centers, community centers and council offices across the city.

Survey results are expected to be shared in late May, with community town halls scheduled for August.
