San Antonio launches ‘Keep Crossings Safe’ to curb pedestrian deaths

San Antonio launches “Keep Crossings Safe” campaign to combat rising pedestrian deaths and enhance crosswalk safety.

SAN ANTONIO — It’s a disturbing trend that continues today across San Antonio – pedestrian deaths.

Wednesday morning, a man was hit and killed crossing Old Highway 90 on the far West side.

Police are still searching for the driver who took off.

A new city initiative called “Keep Crossings Safe” launched Monday. It aims to reduce the amount of pedestrian deaths – like the one here this morning – and inform everyone on crosswalk safety.

TxDOT says there were 83 pedestrian deaths just last year in San Antonio.

“San Antonio is still one of the most dangerous places for pedestrians,” Kristie Flores with the city of San Antonio’s Dept. of Transportation said.

Ranking as the seventh deadliest city for pedestrians in the U.S. is why Flores and her team are raising awareness with empathy and education.

The three main corridors Flores and her team have pinpointed as quote “ high-injury network corridors” include South Zarzamora, W.W. White and Fredricksburg Road.

The transportation department in San Antonio has already begun designing mid-block crossings along Zarzamora Street.

Then a reminder through digital outreach: who is crossing the road.

“To give them the idea, ot only could this be us, but it could be my children, my grandma.”

On their website, silhouettes of people who represent everyone.

“Bring everybody back mentally about staying alert,” Flores said.

And informing people on safety tips they can take into their own hands to prevent deaths like the one just this morning on Old Highway 90.

Visiting their site here, and taking a look at their information, could be the difference between one more pedestrian death and a life saved
