San Antonio law enforcement increases patrols amid security concerns following Austin attack

Local and federal authorities say they are increasing patrols and monitoring potential threats as tensions rise nationally and upcoming events draw large crowds.

SAN ANTONIO — Law enforcement agencies across San Antonio say they are on heightened alert following the recent terrorism incident in Austin and growing tensions involving the United States and Iran.

Officials say the city’s diverse community and upcoming large gatherings, including St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and Fiesta events, are prompting increased vigilance as thousands of people prepare to gather across the city.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office and the San Antonio Police Department say residents may notice more officers in neighborhoods and at popular destinations as authorities monitor potential threats both in person and online.

SAPD officials say the number of terroristic threats reported in San Antonio has steadily increased in recent years. In 2023, the department received 86 reports of terroristic threats that caused public fear. That number rose to 98 reports in 2024. Last year, the department recorded 129 reports, which included threats against public servants and threats of general violence. Police say 17 people were arrested last year in connection with those threats.

In response to recent events, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar says deputies will increase patrols in several areas across the county, including neighborhoods and places of worship.

“You’ll notice increased patrols and patrol bys specifically focused on our affected residential communities and our houses of worship throughout the county,” Salazar said. “Our goal is simple to provide a visible layer of protection and to ensure that every resident, regardless of where they live or how they worship, feels secure.”

In a statement, SAPD said officers have also increased patrols at churches, schools and high-traffic attractions such as Six Flags Fiesta Texas and SeaWorld San Antonio.

Local law enforcement agencies say they will continue working with state and federal partners to monitor threats and keep the community safe. Officials are also encouraging residents to report suspicious activity.

Authorities say anyone who wants additional patrols in their area can contact SAPD’s non-emergency line or reach out to their local SAFFE officer.
