The San Antonio Public Library celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with kid-friendly, Latin American-inspired events.
SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Public Library is commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month with multiple events planned for the next several weeks.
Almost everyday until October 18, one of the city’s libraries will host events, celebrations, and experiences that highlight Latin American cultures and influences.
Many of the events are free and kid-friendly with the library providing supplies, snacks and refreshments.
Some of the recurring events include the Zenith of Zeigarnik exhibit, which is SAPL’s first augmented reality exhibit on display through October 15. In the exhibit, artist Miguel Rodriguez explores personal and geographic memory through reimagined drawings, 3-D modeling, sculpting, and volumetric photogrammetry. Many iconic environments of the Alamo City are included in the Zenith of Zeigarnik, including taquerías, hand-painted signs, and fallen structures.
Another continuous event is the 5-week Cumbia dance classes, where participants will learn how to dance like a pro by the end of the sessions – according to SAPL. Organizers they are offering the classes as cumbia is a big part of social gatherings, festivals and celebrations in many Latin American countries.
There’s also multiple movie showings that are ideal for families with screenings like “Nacho Libre,” “Coco” and “Encanto.”
Some of the various events also highlight religious and culture significance like their DIY Shrine Box event where people will create a shrine or nicho for an Ofrenda using recyclables and scrap materials.
Or, the Hojalata: Mexican Folk Art, which is a form of Mexican folk art that uses tin and other materials to create decorations and functional items. The tradition dates back to the 1500’s.
