San Antonio libraries to host Black History Month programs, exhibits and films

There are more than 30 events being held throughout the month.

SAN ANTONIO — Throughout the month of February, the San Antonio Public Library will be hosting an array of special programming events that celebrate the cultural impact, activism, and achievements of Black people. 

SAPL will be hosting more than 30 events as part of Black History Month beginning Monday, Feb.2 and wrapping up on Feb. 28. 

Go Together: San Antonio’s Black and African American Historic Communities

SAPL is hosting a special pop-up exhibit that highlights the city’s east side neighborhoods, which are known for their rich African American community and culture. The exhibit is open to the public at the Carver Library through Feb. 28.

Black Stories: A History of Black Americans in Texas and the Powerful Impact of Storytelling with Poetry and Spoken Word

Award-winning poet Zenobia Anderson will be hosting a two-hour poetry workshop, where attendees can create and read their works out loud. Guests are encouraged to sign up by emailing zenobiapoetry26@gmail.com or amber.mcginnis@sanantonio.gov. The workshop will be held on multiple days including, Feb. 4 from 4p.m.- 6p.m. at the Carver Library, Feb. 8 from 3:30p.m – 5:30 p.m. at Potranco Branch Library, Feb. 12 from 3p.m. – 5 p.m. at Igo Branch Library. 

Your Local Community: Zine Workshop

Dr. Charles Gentry, OHP Senior Historic Preservation Specialist will discuss the graphic novel, “A Home, a Church & a Hospital: The Development of East San Antonio,” which explores the history of African Americans in the Alamo City. The graphic novel is a component of the larger African American Heritage Preservation Initiative. Attendees will learn how to research and create a zine – a booklet of original or appropriated texts and images, about San Antonio people, places and events that highlight the local history. The event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Pan American Branch Library. 

Carver Friends Black History Month Breakfast & Lecture

The Carver Friends group is presenting Cary Clack in a lecture on Martin Luther King Jr.’s last book “Where do we go from here: Chaos or Community?” Organizers said there will be breakfast tacos, drinks, and a welcoming atmosphere. The breakfast lecture will be held at the Carver Library on Feb. 14 from 10 a.m. -12 p.m. 

Black History Jazz Concert

Saturday, February 21 | 2 – 3 p.m. | Collins Garden Branch Library

Local singer DevSoul will be providing an afternoon of jazz music at the Collins Garden Branch Library on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 2 p.m. – 3p.m. The event gives guests the opportunity to experience soulful melodies that reflect San Antonio’s rich heritage. 

Black History Month Movie Series

SAPL will be hosting a movie screening of multiple films that highlight people of color. The screenings will be held at different library locations across the city. The movies include “The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster,” “Blade,” “Till,” “Spider Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” and several others.
