SAN ANTONIO — Bexar County Judge Jennifer Pena sentenced a man to life in prison after he was found guilty of fatally shooting his pregnant wife while celebrating Father’s Day in 2021, leading to the death of her and their unborn child.

Around 10:30 p.m. on June 21, 2021, the San Antonio Police Department and the San Antonio Fire Department responded to a shooting at the 7500 block of Louis Pasteur Drive and Motel 6.

When police arrived, they found a pregnant victim, later identified as 37-year-old Laura Placker, suffering from two gunshot wounds. EMS tried to save her life, but Placker was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials said Placker and her husband, Dilllon Meckel, were at staying at a hotel to celebrate Father’s Day with their two young children.

An investigation revealed that Meckel and Placker had gotten into a verbal argument before he pulled out a gun and shot her in the head, killing her and their unborn child instantly.

On Wednesday, Meckel was sentenced to spend the rest of his life behind bars.
