San Antonio man with active warrant taken into custody following barricade situation, police say

SAPD said the 50-year-old man reportedly expressed a desire to provoke a “suicide-by-cop” encounter.

SAN ANTONIO — A man with an active arrest warrant was taken into custody Friday evening after a brief barricade situation on the north side, according to the San Antonio Police Department.

SAPD said detectives were conducting surveillance around 6 p.m. in the 3400 block of Green Spring Drive for a man who was wanted on an existing warrant. Investigators said the 50-year-old man had also been the subject of a safety alert because he reportedly expressed a desire to provoke a “suicide-by-cop” encounter.

Before detectives arrived, the suspect called 911 and reported a suicide in progress, police said. When officers reached the home, they found the man had barricaded himself inside and was alone.

SAPD said officers and detectives were eventually able to take the man into custody without incident. He was booked on the warrant and no new charges have been filed at this time.

Police noted the information is preliminary as the investigation remains active and details may change.

This is a developing story.
