San Antonio mother and son in critical condition after wreck on busy Sinton intersection

Sheriff Oscar Rivera said his deputies assisted TxDOT with the installation of flashing red stop lights Tuesday. He hopes that they will prevent future accidents.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A San Antonio mother and her 11-month-old son were gravely injured after colliding with an F-150 Monday morning in San Patricio County, according to local authorities.

DPS told 3NEWS that the mother and child were initially found without a pulse before first responders brought them back to life on the scene.

Salma Aktar, 33, and her son were trapped in the back seat of an Elantra before Sinton EMS got them out of the car and transported them to Calallen Hospital.

Saiful Amin, 32, identified by Sheriff Oscar Rivera as the father of the child, was taken to Spohn Shoreline for injuries sustained in the crash.

The family was travelling North on SH 89 Monday around 10 a.m. when an F-150 struck them as they turned into a crossover to take the US 77 South entrance ramp. A release from DPS says the car the family was travelling in failed to yield the right of way at the stop sign before they were his and knocked into the grass on the side of the intersection.

The driver of the Ford F-150, John Honeycutt, 31, of Sinton was transported to Spohn Shoreline for injuries sustained in the crash.

Sheriff Rivera says his deputies spent Tuesday helping TxDOT install flashing red stop signs near the busy intersection the following Tuesday.

In a post shared to Facebook, Rivera said he hopes the signs will help drivers slow down at the intersection and put a stop to the accidents the community is seeing.

The child’s mother remains in critical condition at Bay Area Hospital. Her 11-month-old was transported to Driscoll Children’s Hospital and remains in critical condition.

Saiful Amin was discharged from Shoreline Monday with minor injuries.

The crash investigation remains on-going.
