SAN ANTONIO — A major fire displaced multiple families on the northeast side on Sunday, June 8. It happened at the Iron Horse Apartments near Loop 410 and Starcrest Drive around 10:30 p.m.
One of the 12 displaced families who lost everything in the fire spoke with KENS 5 about their journey to rebuild what they’ve lost.
Shadé Washington is a mother of two.
“We were so excited to move into our apartment,” Washington said. “Just have a fresh start, you know? Not even 90 days it was [taken] from us. All our dreams were taken from us. It just hurts to see my kids’ room destroyed.”
Shadé and her kids are living with her mom for the time being.
“I’m just grateful that me and my kids were able to get out,” she said.
Officials say at the peak of this fire around 100 firefighters were responding trying to put out the flames.
The third floor of one of the apartment buildings was completely ablaze when firefighters arrived. Shadé and her kids were on the second floor leaving without shoes and only the clothes on their backs.
“Honestly man, we lost everything so any donation, anything, we are much appreciated and blessed,” she said. “God puts stuff in our lives to challenge us and this is not one. We’re going to be able to get through this.”
