San Antonio neighborhood shaken up after man killed in shootout, investigation underway

An east-side neighborhood grapples with fear after a 31-year-old man was killed in a shooting on Wednesday. There are safety concerns in what they call a “war zone.”

SAN ANTONIO — The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office still has not shared the name of the 31-year-old man who died when more than 70 rounds were fired in his direction Wednesday morning on the east side, on the 1500 block of Center Street.

The death, danger, and what can be done to stop the threat are still top of mind for the people who said their Jefferson Heights neighborhood sounded like a war zone.

Online records indicate the first call for help came from one block away on Potomac at around 1:18 a.m.

The caller said the blasts from more than one weapon were so loud they thought someone was banging on the back wall of their house.

Investigators say the victim died when more than one shooter hit the victim, cars and houses.

Neighbors said the targeted house has seen trouble in recent months.

One man, who claims it is common to watch drug transactions in the street said, “I don’t want the issues they have and neither does my house.”

Too afraid to speak on camera, another neighbor who was outside at the time said nobody deserves to live like this.

“I didn’t crawl or run or anything. I went flat. Flat down,” he said “I hit the ground! Like you’re supposed to!”

SAPD provided information about how many times they have been called to the house during the last 60 days.

Before the shooting, there were only two calls in March. One response was for a welfare check and the other was a call to assist the public.

SAPD officers were visible in the area Thursday, where there was quiet after the chaos.

With regard to progress on the case, SAPD provided the following update:

‘This is an active and ongoing investigation. We have no further information to release at this time. If neighbors feel the need to call SAFFE and request a patrol by, they can do so here.”
