San Antonio paper plant to shut down, lay off 89 employees

According to state filings, the employees were notified on Oct. 10 of the closure and were informed layoffs will take place on Nov. 18.

SAN ANTONIO — International Paper will shut down its east-side San Antonio Sheet Plant, laying off 89 employees in the coming weeks, according to state filings.

Based out of Memphis, International Paper is a global producer of sustainable packaging pulp and other fiber-based products, as well as one of the world’s largest recyclers. According to an Oct. 10 notice sent to the Texas Workforce Commission, employees were notified this month of the closure and imminent layoffs.

The layoffs will be completed by Nov. 18, impacting dozens of workers in the thick of the holiday season.

The company said in a statement that the Alamo City plant located at 610 Pop Gunn Drive, near Loop 410 and Interstate 10, “has been a valuable part of the company for a number of years.”

“Recently, the company completed a strategic assessment and made the difficult decision to cease operations at the San Antonio Sheet Plant,” officials said.

The company said it would assist employees and customers through this transition period. It also laid off a dozen employees at a facility in Orange, near Beaumont, last year.
