SAN ANTONIO — Hundreds of people across San Antonio are turning Easter weekend into a camping getaway as the city lifts its overnight curfew at several parks.
The annual tradition allows visitors to pitch tents and stay overnight, drawing families and groups looking to celebrate the holiday outdoors.
Brackenridge Park remains the most popular destination, but city officials say other parks are also seeing strong turnout. Woodlawn Lake ranks as the second most popular camping spot, followed by San Pedro Springs. Additional parks open for camping include McAllister Park, Martin Luther King Park, Roosevelt Park, Schnable Park and Southside Lions Park.
The San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department reminds visitors to follow park rules during their stay. Campers are allowed to bring personal grills, but propane tanks and large trailers are prohibited. Fires are only permitted in designated fire pits, barbecue pits and fire rings.
Visitors can also bring generators, but officials are urging everyone to be mindful of cleanliness throughout the weekend.
“Help us keep our parks clean. Bring extra trash bags,” said Connie Swann with San Antonio Parks and Recreation. “Our teams will be around. We have volunteers and our park stewardship team who will be out there handing out trash bags because we know sometimes people make more trash than they anticipate.”
Officials are also encouraging recycling and remind visitors that glass bottles are not allowed in city parks.
Camping is permitted through 11 p.m. on Easter Sunday. The city is also seeking volunteers to help keep parks clean during the busy weekend.
In addition to camping, Brackenridge Park is hosting several Easter events. The Easter Bunny will be at the Great Lawn from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, festivities continue at Joske Pavilion with an Easter egg hunt, live music and karaoke beginning at noon.
All activities wrap up when parks close at 11 p.m. Sunday.
