SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police will receive a boost in their efforts to combat gang violence. A $4 million grant from the state will continue funding a specialized anti-gang team in the city.
This funding helps keep a specialized team in place within the department that is focused on investigating gang-related crimes and sharing intelligence with other agencies across the region.
SAPD says gang activity strains city and law enforcement resources, not to mention it impacts our younger populations.
Through this program, San Antonio police also serve as a central hub for sharing gang intelligence. Officers work with partners like the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office to coordinate investigations and target gang-related crime.
San Antonio first applied for the grant in 2017 and it has been renewed each year since. By the end of 2024, the funding allowed SAPD to hire four staff members and two officers for the team.
SAPD issued the following statement:
“Funding continues to be an issue and the additional resources from the governor’s office assist to coordinate the anti-gang efforts and community-based prevention strategies.”
The $4 million grant covers the program from September 2026 through August 2027.
