SAN ANTONIO — A man was assaulted and a shotgun was fired near a 1-year-old girl during a chaotic fight between several individuals on the city’s east side Tuesday afternoon, according to San Antonio police.
Officers responded around 4:30 p.m. to a report of a shooting in progress near a convenience store in the area of Richter and El Paso. Authorities said they found signs of an altercation involving multiple people.
An SAPD lieutenant said the altercation eventually led to gunfire when one of the suspects “grabbed a shotgun and fired it from the other side of the fence, probably a good 35 yards away.” They were initially concerned a child may have been hit, but EMS personnel found there was no evidence of injury related to the shooting.
The incident began with a fight involving a group of people jumping a 25-year-old man, police said. The victim sustained a laceration to the back of the head, believed to be from a 2×4 or another wooden object.
Police said the victim eventually retreated to a nearby home, where the situation escalated further.
It’s unknown if the child is related to the male victim, but SAPD said they lived in the area where the shot was fired.
“That’s why they thought the young child, a 1-year-old female, got struck,” the lieutenant said. “EMS checked her out and didn’t say at this time that it looked like she was hit by a buckshot at that distance.”
Responders noted there was some dried blood on the child, but it was not believed to be from the shooting.
Police did not immediately release the name of the 25-year-old victim or any suspects involved in the fight or shooting. As of Tuesday night, they were still looking for the suspects.
