San Antonio police provide details on major accident on I-35

Update at 8:50 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8:

The San Antonio Police Department provided an update on the major accident that caused traffic and delays on southbound Interstate 35 at North St. Mary’s Street on Monday, April 7. SAPD said a 60-year-old man struck traffic barrels and scraped the concrete barrier after suffering from a medical episode while driving. 

SAPD said officers found the man unconscious in the driver’s seat. Police extracted him from the vehicle and performed life-saving measures. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to SAPD. 

At the time, SAPD closed the upper level of I-35 and diverted traffic to the lower level. 

The investigation is ongoing, police said.

SAPD said there is no estimated time for when the upper level will be reopened. Details of the major accident have not been released at this time. 

The accident could cause delays to drivers heading downtown for the Houston vs. Florida national championship game at the Alamodome. Police asked drivers to give plenty of time and expect a possible delay.
