SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police are searching for a suspect after what investigators described as a random machete attack Friday afternoon near the city’s northwest side.
According to the San Antonio Police Department, officers were called just after 2 p.m. to the 1100 block of Vance Jackson Road for a reported cutting in progress.
Police said a man ran into a nearby Shell gas station bleeding heavily from a deep cut to his forehead. The caller told dispatchers he did not witness the attack.
Officers arrived and spoke with the victim, who told them he had been walking on a sidewalk under the I-10 bridge when a man confronted him and struck him in the face with a machete, SAPD said. The suspect then fled the area.
The victim was taken to University Hospital in stable condition, according to police.
SAPD said officers canvassed the area and located what was described as a rusty machete believed to have been used in the attack. Police launched the EAGLE helicopter and set up a perimeter while searching for the suspect.
Investigators described the suspect as a Black adult male with a medium build, last seen wearing an aqua blue shirt and blue jeans. Police said he was seen running north on Vance Jackson Road after the assault.
Investigators are reviewing surveillance video from nearby businesses as they work to develop a better description of the suspect. The investigation remains ongoing.
