Danny Diaz will retire as president of the San Antonio Police Officers’ Association at the end of May amid ongoing contract talks with the city.
SAN ANTONIO — Another leadership change is underway at the San Antonio Police Department as the president of the San Antonio Police Officers’ Association has announced plans to retire.
Danny Diaz said he will step down at the end of May, as the union continues contract negotiations with the city. Diaz remains engaged in those discussions, with another meeting scheduled between the police union and city officials.
Diaz has served with SAPD for 30 years. His retirement from the department will take effect May 31, which also marks the end of his tenure as union president. He has led the association since 2021.
In a statement about his retirement, Diaz called serving as SAPOA president one of the greatest honors of his career.
“I’m incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together, standing united for members, advocating for their rights, and working together to strengthen our role in the community,” Diaz said.
Diaz’s departure comes during a year of significant transition for SAPD. Police Chief William McManus has also announced plans to retire by September.
Under the union’s bylaws, Vice President Johnny Perez will succeed Diaz as president. An election will be held to fill the vice president position.
KENS 5 reached out to SAPOA to determine whether Diaz will remain in his role until a new contract is finalized. Updates will be provided once more information becomes available.
