San Antonio prepares for full day of Juneteenth events honoring history and community

San Antonio will celebrate Juneteenth on June 19 with citywide events, including a golf tournament, fireworks and cultural tours.

On Wednesday, June 19, San Antonio will mark Juneteenth with a citywide celebration that spans from sunrise to sunset. Events will take place at venues across the city—including a golf tournament, community yoga, live music, fireworks and cultural tours—all aimed at honoring the meaning behind the holiday and bringing people together in reflection and unity.

The day begins with the Barron Miller Annual Golf Tournament, a fundraiser supporting the Miller Child Development Center. Later that evening, families can gather at Ackerman Road, where Two Vision Church is hosting a free public fireworks show.

“We’ve got events that focus on God… children… your mental health and your physical health,” said Lisa Jackson, Public Relations Manager for the San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum (SAAACAM).

For those seeking a deeper historical understanding of Juneteenth and Black experiences in Texas, SAAACAM will also lead a Green Book Tour, which highlights historically significant sites in San Antonio that once served as safe havens for Black travelers during segregation.

“There was a book put out called the Green Book… and the Green Book outlined to African Americans where it was safe,” Jackson explained.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day Union troops arrived in Galveston to announce the end of slavery—two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Though often mistaken as a “Black holiday,” Jackson emphasized that Juneteenth is about something bigger.

“People seem to think that Juneteenth is an African American or Black holiday, and they’re completely wrong… the overall theme is freedom, which is so American,” she said.

This year’s events offer more than just entertainment—they offer education, healing and community. From faith-centered gatherings to family picnics, organizers say the day is built for everyone.

“Juneteenth is just full of so many different events… whatever it is you’re looking for, they’ve got it,” Jackson said.

For those who can’t make it on Wednesday, the celebration continues Saturday, June 22, with a free Juneteenth Block Party at Crockett Park, hosted by the Big Dream Scholarship Foundation. The event kicks off at 1 p.m. and will feature food, music and resources from community partners.

“I hope they come away with a sense of community… and a desire to see the future better for their children,” Jackson said.
