San Antonio Rotary Club launches first Duck Derby to support local nonprofits

The Rotary Club of San Antonio hosts its first Duck Derby on May 9, offering fun races on the river to support charities and engage the community.

SAN ANTONIO — Get ready to root for your favorite rubber duck.

The Rotary Club of San Antonio is launching its first-ever San Antonio Duck Derby on May 9, bringing a splashy, family-friendly fundraiser to the Historic Pearl Riverbend Amphitheater.

According to organizers, thousands of bright yellow rubber ducks will pour into the San Antonio River and race toward the finish line during the high-energy event, set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Race time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

Proceeds from the Duck Derby will benefit three local nonprofits, the Rotary Club of San Antonio said: the club’s Kingdom for Kids initiative, which builds safe play spaces for children; SNIPSA, an animal rescue and low-cost spay and neuter provider; and Snack Pak 4 Kids San Antonio, which helps feed children facing food insecurity.

“This exciting new event brings our community together for a day of fun, philanthropy and friendly competition,” Rotary Club of San Antonio President Kelley Frost said in a statement. “Every duck adopted helps improve lives across our city.”

Community members and local businesses can “adopt” ducks for a chance to win prizes while supporting the cause. Adoption levels start at $10 for a single duck and range up to $100 for a 20-duck “Quack Pack,” according to the Rotary Club of San Antonio.

Founded in 1912, the Rotary Club of San Antonio has supported projects ranging from education and disease prevention to disaster relief and environmental efforts. The club said the Duck Derby is the latest way it aims to make an impact locally — one duck at a time.

The event is open to the public. More information, including duck adoption details, is available at the website here, according to the Rotary Club of San Antonio.
