San Antonio seeks $1M grant to improve safety on General McMullen after critical crash

After a 74-year-old woman was critically injured crossing General McMullen, the city is now pushing for $1 million in safety upgrades.

SAN ANTONIO — The City of San Antonio is looking to make a dangerous stretch of road safer after a serious crash left an elderly woman critically injured.

City leaders have applied for a $1 million Highway Safety Improvement Program grant to upgrade safety along General McMullen, particularly near Wallace Street.

The push comes after a crash Tuesday involving a 74-year-old woman who was crossing the street after leaving a nearby H-E-B.

Police say a driver was going through a green light when the woman was hit and became trapped under the vehicle. She was taken to the hospital with life-threatening internal injuries. The driver stayed at the scene, and charges are not expected.

City data shows the intersection has been a problem area for years. Between 2014 and 2024, eight people were hit while crossing General McMullen at Wallace Street.

If the grant is approved, the city plans to re-stripe the roadway, add sidewalks and ADA-accessible ramps, and upgrade traffic signals to give pedestrians a head start before vehicles move.

Officials expect to hear back on the funding decision later this summer.
