San Antonio Spurs’ Castle spends off season at alma mater; Ex-Spurs player Belinelli retires from basketball

Stephon Castle works out at UConn, and former Spurs player Marco Belinelli retires from basketball after an incredible career.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Spurs‘ Stephon Castle spent a part of his offseason with a return to UConn, where he got in some work on the court.

The 2025 NBA Rookie of the Year has been putting in work since the season wrapped up.

He worked with “The Guard Whisperer,” Olin Simplis, on his perimeter shot, and Simplis shared a video of Castle working on his shot on social media. In the footage, he is learning to make his midrange shots while a defender is on him, drives to the post, and takes bumps while shooting the ball. He is also working on his three-point shot.

EX-SPUR BELINELLI ANNOUNCES HIS RETIREMENT 

Former San Antonio Spurs forward Marco Belinelli has announced his basketball retirement.

After winning the 2025 Italian Championship with Virtus Bologna, Belinelli decided it was the perfect time for him to retire.

Virtus Segafredo Bologna president and owner Massimo Zanetti confirmed the retirement of the former NBA champion and team captain.

“Next year, we will have a younger team. We know Tornike Shengelia is leaving and Marco Belinelli will retire, so the goal will be to rejuvenate this group, Zanetti said to EuroHoops.

The 39-year-old spent the last five years of his career overseas, after 13 years in the NBA.

He played with San Antonio from 2013 to 2015 and from 2018 to 2020. He helped the Spurs win the 2014 NBA title and won the 2014 NBA 3-Point Contest while a member of the Spurs. He scored a career-high 32 points in a 101–105 loss to the New York Knicks on Jan. 2, 2014.
