
On May 27 through the 29, 243 spelling champions from across the United States will battle for the Scripps Cup along with bragging rights.
SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio seventh grader is scheduled to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in less than two weeks.
13-year-old Siyonamithra Kandala will be making her third appearance at the national competition. She previously tied for 23rd place in 2023 and again for 177th place in 2024.
Bruhat Soma, 12, of Tampa, Florida, won the prestigious spelling competition on May 30, 2024.
“Siyona” is currently a student at the Keystone School, located in midtown. She was sponsored by the BASIS Ed Texas and BASIS Texas Charter Schools, Inc.
On May 27 through the 29, over 200 spelling champions from across the United States will battle for the Scripps Cup and bragging rights.
According to the Scripps website, Siyona’s hobbies include reading books, playing with her little sister and practicing Carnatic music – an Indian classical style. She also enjoys hanging out with her friends, listening to music and writing stories.
Siyona’s favorite subject is science and her favorite movie is “Inside Out.”
The preliminaries will be held on Tuesday, May 27 followed by the quarterfinals on May 28. The public can watch them on Bounce XL. The semifinals and finals will be held Wednesday night and Thursday night, respectively. You can watch those on the ion channel.
