San Antonio teacher mistakenly served alcoholic drinks to students; 5 sent to school nurse, NISD says

The staff member who brought the drinks did not realize they contained alcohol, officials say.

SAN ANTONIO — Five San Antonio students consumed alcoholic drinks and visited a school nurse after a teacher inadvertently brought them as a treat on Thursday, the last day of school, officials say.

According to Northside ISD, a special education teacher brought several cans of Hard Mountain Dew Blast, which contains alcohol, and made them available to students at Pease Middle School in three different classes.

“The staff member brought the drinks, not realizing that they contained alcohol, as a treat for students,” NISD Spokesperson Barry Perez said.

An investigation determined a total of five students consumed portions of the drinks. Each of the students was seen by a campus nurse and parents of the affected students were notified by the school administration.

The incident was reported to the Northside Employee Relations as the district’s investigation continues, Perez said. The campus also notified the NISD Police Department and will be making a report with Child Protective Services.

This is a developing story.
