Top workplaces 2023
Sean Pavone Photo/Getty Images/iStockphotoGreat workplaces aren’t created by accident. They are built and nurtured. The San Antonio Express-News’ Top Workplaces awards recognize employers that do it well in their employees’ eyes.
Engaging, nurturing and retaining employees has never been particularly simple, but the past few years have presented new challenges.
When employers moved suddenly to adopt remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic and the share of employed Americans working exclusively from home jumped to 54% in 2020 from 4% in 2019, it remade workplaces.

The impacts of that are still being measured.
But early results are emerging. Studies reveal a mixed economic picture in which many workers and businesses have made real gains under remote work arrangements while many others have had to bear costs.
Broadly, the portrait that emerges is this: Brick-and-mortar businesses suffered in urban downtowns, as many people stopped commuting. Still, some kinds of businesses, like grocery stores, have been able to gain a foothold in the suburbs. At the same time, rents rose in affordable markets as remote and hybrid workers left expensive urban housing.
Working mothers have generally benefited from the flexibility of being able to work remotely — more were able to stay in the workforce. But remote work also seems to bring some steep penalties in career advancement for women.

Studies of productivity in work-from-home arrangements are all over the map. Some research has linked remote work with productivity declines from 8% to 19%, while others find drops of 4% for individual workers; still other research has found productivity gains of 13% or even 24%.
Nick Bloom, an economist at Stanford University who studies remote work, said the latest studies show that productivity differs between remote workplaces depending on an employer’s approach — how well trained managers are at the art of supporting remote employees and whether those employees have opportunities for occasional meet-ups.
Researchers tend to agree that many workplaces have settled into a new hybrid phase, where offices are at about half their pre-pandemic occupancy levels and about a quarter of American workdays are done from home. That suggests some of the effects of remote work may stick.
As Bloom put it: “This is the new normal.” This program aims to honor those who are doing it right.
The heart of the Top Workplaces awards is the employee survey process. Express-News partner Energage administers a 24-question survey to employees, who are the sole deciders of whether a company culture merits recognition.
This is the 15th year the Express-News has partnered with Energage, an employee survey company based in Pennsylvania, to celebrate exceptional workplaces in the San Antonio metro area. There is no cost to participate in Top Workplaces and no obligation to buy any product or service.

This year, 1,880 organizations were invited to survey their employees. Based on employee survey feedback, a record 120 employers have earned recognition as Top Workplaces.
In the current job market, companies continue to focus on recruiting, retaining and motivating employees. It’s more important than ever for companies to be intentional about creating a culture that prioritizes employee appreciation and recognition, Energage CEO Eric Rubino said.
“We really need workplaces that inspire employees,” he said. “You have to really acknowledge employees genuinely and consistently.”
The award is open to any employer with 35 or more employees in the San Antonio area. Survey results are valid only if at least 35% of employees respond; employers with fewer than 85 employees have a higher response threshold, requiring responses from at least 30 employees.

Energage tabulates the survey results. Employers are grouped into small, midsize and large to best compare similar employee experiences. Employers earn Top Workplaces recognition if their aggregated employees feedback score exceeds national benchmarks. Energage has established those benchmarks based on feedback from more than 27 million employees over 17 years of conducting such research. They are ranked within those groups based on the strength of the survey feedback.
Wondering why a particular company isn’t on the list? Perhaps it chose not to participate, or its employee survey feedback might have fallen below benchmark scores. Energage runs tests on survey feedback and, in some cases, may choose to disqualify organizations based on irregularities in survey feedback.
