Residents can choose from three design options through an online survey open until January 11.
SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio wants your input on the future of Copernicus Park.
The City of San Antonio has purchased more than 12 acres along Lord Road to expand the park and develop a new senior-focused campus. District 2 Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez says the project has been years in the making and is centered on supporting the area’s growing senior population.
The current District 2 senior center on WW White Road has served the community for 14 years, but McKee-Rodriguez says it has outgrown its space and can no longer meet demand.
Plans for Copernicus Park include upgrades to the existing park and community center, along with a new senior center, a natatorium, affordable housing for seniors, and soccer fields. While each proposed master plan includes those core amenities, the layout and design of the park differ in each option.
Residents are being asked to weigh in through a public input survey, which allows the community to choose between three concepts: a sports-focused option, an organic field option, or a flex field option.
McKee-Rodriguez says the project is designed to benefit residents of all ages for generations to come.
“Thinking about this campus as a whole, we want that for our whole community from a young age to those who are more seasoned,” McKee-Rodriguez said. “This is about a bright future for District 2 and for all of our residents.”
The city is also working with the San Antonio Housing Trust Authority to determine how many affordable housing units for seniors could be built at the site.
The community survey is open now and will close January 11. The next step after public input will be identifying funding sources, including a potential request in the city’s 2027 bond package.
